THE PROCESS

DESIGN

Fallen Log Woodworks transforms an ordinary log into extraordinary wood turnings.

Much of the wood used in Tom’s projects were destined to be burned or left to return to the earth.  Using fresh cut logs or discarded wood stock, Tom finds great satisfaction in creating elegant objects from material once considered waste.

Tom’s inspiration comes from nature and the wood itself. As nature has a way of removing distractions and rarely displaying straight lines or right angles, Tom uses this movement in the wood to determine each project’s unique beauty. No two pieces are the same.

SELECTION

Most of the wood is sourced from locally fallen trees in Middle Tennessee, such as maple, red and white oak.

Hidden in those fallen trees is wood disfigured by the beginnings of decomposition. Turning that wood on a lathe produces strikingly unique wood turnings. The wood in our products are figured by the decomposition and aging of the wood, which we call “splatted.”

Additionally, we select hardwood stock waste from local furniture makers. This wood would otherwise be burn or discarded.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Throughout my life, I have enjoyed working with wood and found woodturning a process I really love.

Searching for fallen trees, cutting the logs, determining grain patterns and, in general, being creative with a chainsaw culminates with turning a unique piece of wood on the lathe.

The process supports my logical mindset, stirs my creativity, and energizes my passions as nature’s design is revealed.

It’s a wonderful thing to be a craftsman, and I’m happy to be on this journey. A big part of being a craftsman is teaching others what you do and help them learn the skills needed to perfect the craft.
